AI Meets Empathy: Mapping Be My Eyes
Project type
Exploring the intersection of accessibility, AI, and design.
Date
Spring 2024
Location
Washington, D.C
A multi-perspective exploration of assistive technology, human-AI interaction, and inclusive digital infrastructure. This team project presents a comprehensive analysis of Be My Eyes, an innovative mobile platform that connects visually impaired individuals with sighted volunteers through real-time video support. The app assists users in managing everyday visual tasks, such as reading labels or locating objects, thereby fostering greater independence. Our interdisciplinary research explores the platform through five key lenses: History & Iteration, Motivations & Power Players, Metals & Bits (technological infrastructure), Infrastructures & Standards (including legal and accessibility frameworks), and Users & Non-Users. By examining its technical architecture, AI integration (notably with OpenAI), volunteer dynamics, and accessibility compliance, this project highlights how Be My Eyes exemplifies inclusive design and social impact through technology.
