Visual Language of the Olympics
Project type
Graphic Design Research & Editorial Design
Location
Washington, D.C
Date
Spring 2025
This project combines graphic design research, logo and pictogram analysis, and editorial design, culminating in a self-designed booklet created using Adobe InDesign, investigating the visual identity of the Olympic Games through a graphic design lens, with a focus on Beijing 2008 and 2022. By analyzing emblems, mascots, torches, and pictograms, the booklet explores how design communicates national identity while maintaining universal accessibility. Drawing on principles such as Gestalt theory, universal iconography, and logo analysis frameworks like Skaggs' Visual Gamut and Lidwell’s ARMM model, the project examines how cultural heritage and global design standards intersect in Olympic branding. The final deliverable will be a printed booklet, designed and typeset using Adobe InDesign.
